I very recently heard a thought presented in regards to God's divine discipline. I've decided to tweak that thought a little and share it with you.
God's discipline is a proof of His love for His children. We've heard this before, but do we always live like we believe it? Hebrews 12:1-13 helps shed some light on the subject.
In verse one we are commanded to lay aside all the "extra spiritual fat" and "parasitic sins"(The Message). Seems like a pretty tall order right up front, doesn't it? Did you ever consider the fact that this command is very beneficial to you? Well, it is. It's easy for us to fall into the mindset that God wants us as Christians to be comfortable in this present world. But the reality of it is that being a follower of Jesus Christ automatically sets us running against the grain of the world's morals, values, goals, etc. So, when we are told to get rid of anything that might hinder our relationship with Christ, it is partly because we will have enough hardships and battles to deal with along the journey that we don't need anything adding to the pile.
God's discipline is also a mark of Sonship. This is a way of showing us He cares for us and claims us as His own children. His chastening helps us avoid the danger of apostasy, a characteristic of the selfish and unruly. Discipline is God's act as the responsible Parent training His children to be fully equipped for this present life and the pursuit of life beyond this world. We must not let suffering shake our faith. Rather, let it be a reminder that our Heavenly Father is in control.
Lastly, I'd like to encourage us all to endure and embrace God's discipline. We cannot assume to understand the unseen spiritual realities of our chastening. The "sufferings" that drive us nuts may be the very tools that God will use to help save our lives. Next time you recognize God's chastening, value and appreciate His divine training.
Thanks for indulging my sermon to self. I hope it is a help to you as well.
P.S. I encourage you to read Hebrews 12:1-13 a few times for yourself. I promise you will not regret it.
